Josh Brolin, who most recently was seen as Thanos in the blockbuster that is The Avengers: Infinity War, but whom I will always remember as Bran from The Goonies, has joined the cast of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune as Gurney Halleck. The role was originated in David Lynch’s version by Sir Patrick Stewart.
Brolin joins Timothee Chalmet, Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Rampling, Stellan Skarsgard, David Bautista, and the most recently announced Javier Bardem as Stillgar. Although I previously announced Oscar Issac, he seems to still be in negotiations as is Zendaya for the roles of Duke Leto and Chani respectively.
I do like this casting choice as Brolin has the brashness and bravado needed to carry a character like Gurney. This is another one I could have seen as Duncan Idaho as well, but Gurney is a better fit, at least I feel, for Brolin.
Athough Brolin has had his fair share of playing action role villains recently, Deadpool 2 comes to mind in addition to his role in The Avengers: Infinity War, I believe Brolin has the chops to play the good guy as Gurney. Brolin has some history with Villeneuve as well, as he starred in Sicario, which Villeneuve had directed.
The big question still on every Dune fans mind, who will Villeneuve cast as Feyd Rautha? My eyes will be peeled to get you that news as soon as we find out.
