The 95th Oscars went off without a “Hitch.” And yes, Jimmy Kimmel made more than a few jokes at last year’s Best (and Bad) Actor Will Smith’s expense. Pardon me for the corny joke, but If you want to know If one film won a majority of the awards, the Daniels did so, winning nearly Everything… pretty much Everywhere… and practically All at Once.
Everything Everywhere All at Once was the big winner of the night taking home seven statuettes, including a near-sweep of the major categories. The sci-fi action/fantasy won Best Picture, Best Directing, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Actress in a Lead Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, and Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Writing/directing tandem Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert join a very exclusive list winning a directing and writing Oscar on the same night.
All Quiet on the Western Front was the second most recognized film of the night. The technical wizardy of the harrowing war film earned it Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best International Film, and Best Production Design. That left little room on the stage for indie darlings The Banshees of Inisherin and Tár, The blockbuster installments of Top Gun, Black Panther, and Avatar, or any other of the competing nominees.
Listed below are the complete listed winners, along with links to reviews to nearly every nominated film and instant analysis of major category wins in comparison with our Film Obsessive critics’ predictions.
Best Picture
The Oscar goes to…Everything Everywhere All at Once (A24)

We at Film Obsessive predicted this win correctly. But by the end of the evening, presenter Harrison Ford’s announcement might have seemed like a forgone conclusion. Everything Everywhere All at Once made quite a sweep during awards season taking home the top prize at the Directors Guild, Producers Guild, and three acting awards at the Screen Actors Guild.
Actor in a Leading Role
The Oscar goes to…Brendan Fraser – The Whale

he Academy Award follows Fraser’s win at the SAG awards, predicting his trend for the night, and one our staff correctly predicted in a close race over Colin Farrell and Austin Butler. Fraser makes a big comeback in Hollywood by taking down the Oscar. His acceptance speech was as heartfelt as his performance.
Actor in a Supporting Role
The Oscar goes to…Ke Huy Quan – Everything Everywhere All at Once

Nearly every one of our Film Obsessive staff tabbed Quan for this award. The nearly-forgotten child star who played pickpocket Short Round in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom cleaned up at most of the award shows. Ke Huy Quan makes quite the comeback in Hollywood to take home his first Oscar.
Actress in a Leading Role
The Oscar goes to…Michelle Yeoh – Everything Everywhere All at Once

There was more than one sure thing about the Actress in a Leading Role category this year: Ana de Armas was not going to win for the controversial Blonde, nor would Andrea Riseborough with her controversial nomination for To Leslie. Film Obsessive predicted Cate Blanchett to win her third Academy Award, but Michelle Yeoh’s win—her first Oscar—was another triumph for the Everythign Everywhere team on a night full of them and a long-deserved victory for the veteran action star.
Actress in a Supporting Role
The Oscar goes to…Jamie Lee Curtis – Everything Everywhere All at Once

Like our Film Obsessive staff critics, many thought this category would go to Angela Bassett for her mournful role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. But the first indication of Everything Everywhere All at Once’s domination came when Jamie Lee Curtis was named Best Actress in a Supporting Role, the first Oscar in her long career. Gaining steam after her win at the SAG awards, Curtis upset our picks of Bassett and dark horse Kerry Condon of The Banshees of Inishiren, the second of the three acting awards for Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Angela Bassett – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Directing
The Oscar goes to…Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert – Everything Everywhere All at Once

Film Obsessive predicted Steven Spielberg to snag a win for The Fabelmans here, but our dark horse pick of “The Daniels” lands instead. This adds to their DGA win and is a second Oscars statue to go with their Best Original Screenplay.
Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
The Oscar goes to…Sarah Polley – Women Talking. We got this one right! A good win for Polley that spreads some love among the main awards.

Writing (Original Screenplay)
The Oscar goes to…Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert – Everything Everywhere All at Once. We predicted McDonagh and The Banshees of Inisherin here, but at least we mentioned “The Daniels” as the dark horse. They take home a key award to go with the other front line awards the film has won.
