97th Oscar Noms Announced: Emilia Perez Leads

Thursday morning, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released their list of Oscar 2024 film nominations for the 97th Academy Awards. The most recognized films were Emilia Perez (13 nominations), The Brutalist (10 nominations), and Wicked (10 nominations) establishing themselves as frontrunners at the awards show. Other notables were A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Anora receiving 6-8 nominations.

Emilia Perez sets the record for most nominations by a non-english language film, besting the previous record of 10 by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Roma (2018). Karla Sofia Gascon of Emilia Perez made history as the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for an Oscar. For the sixth consecutive year, a film directed by a woman has been nominated for Best Picture (Coralie Fargeat in The Substance). The race for Best Actor in a Leading Role is a tight race between former Oscar winner Adrian Brody in The Brutalist and three time nominee Ralph Fiennes in Conclave.

The 97th Academy Awards ceremony serves as the culminating event, airing on ABC and Hulu Sunday March 2nd, 2024 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, CA. The event is hosted by Conan O’Brien.
