98th Oscar Nominations Announced: Sinners Sets New Record

Thursday morning, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released their list of nominations for the 98th Academy Awards. Ryan Coogler’s Southern Gothic vampire drama Sinners led the way with a record 16 nominations, beating the previous best of 14. One Battle After Another also clocked in with an impressive 13 nominations. Rounding out the top five in nomination count were Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value with nine nominations each.

Sinners breaks the record of 14 nominations previously held by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land. Veteran director Paul Thomas Anderson received his 14th nomination of his career for One Battle After Another, including his fourth in directing and sixth in writing. Two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone received her seventh acting nomination for Bugonia. Hamnet carries several records itself: Steven Spielberg now leads all producers with 14 nominations and director Chloe Zhao becomes the second woman (Jane Campion) to earn multiple directing nominations. A record four non-English language performances are nominated this year (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Wagner Moura, Renate Reinsve, and Stellan Skarsgård). The Secret Agent and Sentimental Value also touch rare air with two non-English language films in Best Picture.

The 98th Academy Awards ceremony serves as the culminating awards season event, airing on ABC and Hulu Sunday March 15th, 2026 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, CA.
