North American Film Critics Association Names Their Annual Winners

This week, the North American Film Critics Association (NAFCA) announced winners in all 24 categories for their annual awards slate. The winners were determined by the vote of members, with The Substance winning three awards, including Best Picture. Film Obsessive Editor-in-Chief Don Shanahan is a proud member of the NAFCA.

In addition to Best Picture, The Substance had Demi Moore win as Best Actress and Coralie Fargeat win for Best Director. In the other acting races, Ralph Fiennes won the award for Best Actor for his work in the film Conclave. Meanwhile, Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain. A Real Pain also took home a second award for Best Screenplay.

Ariana Grande won Best Supporting Actress for her work on Wicked, which also won the award for Best Costumes. Other films that one multiple awards include Challengers—recognized for Best Score and Best Editing—and Nosferatu—which won for Best Horror Film and Best Production Design.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, the most nominated film, took home just one award for Best Visual Effects. Meanwhile the A24 drama Civil War won for Best Sound and Nickel Boys took the award for Best Cinematography. Dev Patel’s Monkey Man earned the award for Best Stunts, while Frodo the Cat won for Best Animal Performance in A Quiet Place: Day One.

Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night won as Best Comedy, while Sing Sing took the award for Best Independent Movie. The Best Hidden Gem award went to I Saw the TV Glow, while Hit Man was named the Best Streaming Movie. The Best Animated Film honor went to The Wild Robot, with The Seed of the Sacred Fig winning as Best International Feature. The award for Best Documentary Feature went to Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. All the winners are below:
