Greetings Earth’s greatest champions! Will Johnson here to give you exciting details on Episode 7 of the Cinephile Hissy Fit podcast (co-hosted by the inimitable Don Shanahan)! This week we fight for the soul… wait, this sounds familiar. Are we covering *sigh* 2021’s Mortal Kombat? Yes, we are. Don’s excited about it at least.

Believe it or not, Mortal Kombat is somewhat of a sensation. I went to the theater to see the film on opening day—yeah, an actual theater! You guys remember those?—and it was sold out throughout the night. So, like many others, I watched on HBO Max and was… not impressed. Don had much better things to say, which you can check out here. Needless to say, the love/hate alliances were set and we decided to continue the Kombat Koverage (don’t take that out editors!) by transitioning from the great 1995 original to this.

While we try not to do a direct comparison to the 1995 film, we can’t help but compare the new entry’s attempts at expanding mythology and lore to the seemingly effortless attempts in the first film. We also look at the characters; the good, the bad, the bleh, the obvious sequel set-up, and how Warners Bros. is succeeding (or not) with this theater-streaming deal.
