The Cinephile Hissy Fit Is Tempted By The Hand That Rocks the Cradle

The hosts of the Cinephile Hissy Fit podcast, sponsored and supported by the Ruminations Radio Network, often look back at American life before 9/11 and marvel at the differences that show up in movies. One thing that stands out from time to time are the different topics or settings of things that caused fear and made for intriguing plots for a movie. In particular, the 1990s had a run of movies that preyed on the possibility of “domestic terrors” that threatened the sanctity of a nuclear family and their proverbial white picket-fenced home. One of those was The Hand That Rocks the Cradle.

For their 193rd episode, two suburbanite film critics, two nanny-gawking dads, and two accosted school teachers, Will Johnson and Don Shanahan, circle back to that cinematic cottage industry of so-called domestic terror. Today, those stories of pearl-clutching fears found in the upper middle class never make it out of Hallmark movies. There was a time they were hits at the box office. One of the best to get the audience’s blood boiling was 1992’s The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, directed by the late Curtis Hanson and starring Rebecca De Mornay. It’s time to steal a baby, but this show won’t steal yours. Come learn more and stay for the mutual love and respect that fun movies encapsulate. Enjoy our podcast!
