The frenetic style of Aussie director Baz Luhrmann is, shall we say, an “acquired taste.” Some folks love the volume-bursting nature of his films, while others cover their ears like hearing harpies of Greek mythology. The Cinephile Hissy Fit podcast ran into that very divisive situation on its newest episode covering the 2013 3D-popping blockbuster version of The Great Gatsby, starring future Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, and every shiny thing Luhrmann could light and film.

For their 231st episode, two decadent film critics, two old sport dads, and partying school teachers, Will Johnson and Don Shanahan, finally have, for what seems like the first time in a while, found a movie they truly feel opposite on to a nearly hate vs. love level, and it might not be from a place you typically expect. The loaded argument in question surrounds Baz Luhrmann’s sparkly and loud The Great Gatsby. Between these two guys, one of them had seen it, and the other had not. Both have read F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book as students and, now, teachers. Find out who takes what side. Enjoy our podcast!
