The hosts of the Cinephile Hissy Fit podcast, sponsored and supported by the Ruminations Radio Network, are proud to bow at the altar of the late filmmaker William Friedkin. Though the movie industry lost Friedkin in 2023, he showered Hollywood with several hits and masterpieces across several decades, including The Exorcist and The French Connection from the 1970s to Cruising in the 1980s. Our guys haven’t seen all of the best William had to offer, but they’ll aim to try. First up is To Live and Die in L.A., one near the top of many cinephile’s rankings for the director.

For their 191st episode, two Secret Service film critics, two sweaty dads, and two counterfeit school teachers, Will Johnson and Don Shanahan, seep into the seedy side of nefarious crimes of money and the slimy side of Los Angeles with William Friedkin’s 1985 stunner To Live and Die in L.A. Our guys always make time for a Willem Dafoe blind spot and this was a winner, thanks to the detailed mystery and the bold swerves orchestrated by the director. Come to learn more and stay for the mutual love and respect that fun movies encapsulate.
