In March 2024, Ivan Leung and Harrison Xu of Extremely Unique Dynamic sat down with Film Obsessive at what was the start of a whirlwind festival run. Now, nine months later, the duo have taken their film around the world to play at festivals like Frameline, NewFest, Inside Out, and more. They have racked up Best Feature, Best Director, and Alternative Spirit awards all while maintaining a 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s quite the life for a movie that was born out of two friends getting high and eating Thai food with the desire to make something together.

With their festival run wrapping up, Extremely Unique Dynamic will be released in theaters on January 10, 2025 and available on Video on Demand beginning January 29, 2025. That’s not all Leung and Xu have up their sleeves. Film Obsessive is pleased to share the exclusive debut of the music video for “Interesting Enough,” one of the songs from the just-released soundtrack to the film.

Anyone who has made a film knows that music rights can eat away much of a movie’s budget. Originally, the team behind Extremely Unique Dynamic wanted to use the pop-punk classic “Fat Lip” by Sum 41, but as an indie production with a limited budget, they weren’t able to afford the rights. In the DIY spirit of the film, Xu and Leung decided to take matters into their own hands. The duo wrote “Interesting Enough” with friends Nikola Simikic and Jake Porter. The baseball-themed music video was born out of the fun they had writing the song and director Justin Crowell captures the infectious joy that oozes out of every part of Extremely Unique Dynamic. Even though the lyrics reference making this specific movie, “Interesting Enough” wouldn’t be out of place on a playlist alongside Simple Plan, Forever the Sickest Kids, Fall Out Boy, and the pop-punks greats of the early-2000s. Because they couldn’t afford to use a classic of the genre, they’ve made something new and special all their own. Perhaps this is the beginning of a pop-punk renaissance. One can only hope.

Along with the debut of the music video for “Interesting Enough,” the full soundtrack for Extremely Unique Dynamic is now available to stream on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. Other tracks on the album, like “Absolutely Nothing,” exemplify the goofy nature of the film that Xu and Leung have created with their film. Interspersed between these songs are the score selections composed by Ian Mackley. These selections range from the chaos of “Celebrity Cameo” to the gentle, contemplative “Clutching Pillows.”

At the core of Extremely Unique Dynamic is Leung and Xu who wrote, starred, directed, and produced the film. The story follows Daniel (Leung) and Ryan (Xu), who, like their real-life actors, are longtime friends. Seemingly out of nowhere, Ryan announces that he is leaving Los Angeles to move to Canada to be with his fiancé. Over the course of their final weekend, Daniel and Ryan decide to making a movie about two friends making a movie about two friends making a movie. Under these meta layers is a sweet bromance about two friends who care deeply about each other, but have no idea how to say what they feel.

Extremely Unique Dynamic is a movie even for the meta-averse. A film whose greatest strength is the dynamic of the two best friends. A dynamic that’s, yes, extremely unique, but also will remind you of the Ryans and the Daniels in your own life. While other movies use multiverses to shy away from sincerity, Extremely Unique Dynamic goes all-in with its heart on its sleeve.

Extremely Unique Dynamic is screening at Vidiots in Los Angeles January 3 – 9, 2025. Tickets are available through Vidiots. The film will then play at the Laemmle NoHo January 6 – 10, 2025. Tickets are available through Laemmle.
