When I was a little girl, I used to practice my Oscars speech in front my collection of stuffies. I would think of all the people I would thank for my “Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role” win. That dream has darted and shifted over the years —now I have my eyes set on a Pulitzer— but that feeling still gets me sometimes. The Oscars this year went host-less, which from early reactions seems was a good thing. Variety states that ratings for the telecast actually increased to 6% over last year’s show.
There has been much talk over the validity of the awards, and the show itself becoming nothing more than a popularity contest or calculated voting. I do not have a strong feeling either way. I do know that not having a host seemed to make the show go smoother, in the places I did happen to catch, and that the Academy took care in making it more of a celebration of film and performances.
Speaking of performances, A Star Is Born was one of the award show darlings this year and the performance from Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper of the now Oscar winning song “Shallow”, was truly a Hollywood moment.
While I did not agree with all the winners, whenever any artist decides to share their talent and dedication with the world, they should be appreciated for that talent.

The big winner of the night for me was Olivia Colman. I regret to say I have not seen The Favourite yet, but would like to. I kept thinking to myself during her speech, “Where do I know her?” and then while flipping through the channels and seeing that Hot Fuzz was on, it came to me. “OMG! Olivia Colman was Doris!!!” So this made her excitement at winning an Oscar and her speech all the more beautiful; especially since I was once that little girl watching on the telly.
