The hosts of the Cinephile Hissy Fit podcast have discovered, through their years of episodes, that there are certain cornerstone films in cinema history that feel like entry-level requirements in order to call oneself any kind of cinephile or afficionado. You may or may not like these honored films in question, but they demand, at minimum, a courtesy viewing. For each person, they may end up being a legitimate classic, or they might feel like tedious homework you’ll never watch again. Either way, they garner respect and a genuflection. Maybe the primest example of this type of obligatory movie experience is 2001: A Space Odyssey.

For their 213th episode, two AI-fearing film critics, two hominid dads, and two bored teachers, Will Johnson and Don Shanahan, venture into the prophetic and distant science fiction of 24 years ago by way of 57 years ago. Those that can do the math can deduce they’re talking about Stanley Kubrick’s cornerstone epic 2001: A Space Odyssey. This was an egregious blindspot for Will and a contrarian hate spot for Don, who’s tried many times to embrace it. Come learn more and stay for the mutual love and respect that fun movies encapsulate. Enjoy our podcast!
