One of the biggest surprises of 2020 was Sonic the Hedgehog. While it seemed like just another throwaway video game movie, it actually ended up being pretty good. It featured loveable characters, a heartwarming story, and a great performance by Jim Carrey, so fans have been anxiously awaiting the sequel ever since we saw Sonic’s beloved sidekick Tails in the post-credits scene. And now, with the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, that wait feels a little bit shorter.
There’s so much to love about this trailer, so I’m just going to get right into it. For starters, it has pretty much everything that made the first film such a success. We see all the characters we fell in love with last year, and we get just enough of a taste of the humor and action to whet our appetites. Simply put, this movie looks set to recapture the magic of the first one, and I’m all for it.
But don’t get the wrong idea. The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 trailer does way more than just rehash the previous movie. It also teases a much more epic story, and it introduces some fresh elements we haven’t seen before. Most obviously, there are two brand new characters in Tails and Knuckles, and they both look great. You can tell they’re going to bring an entirely new dynamic to the film, and I’m super excited to see them on the big screen together with Sonic.
Along similar lines, the return of Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik is everything I wanted it to be. As great as the character was in the first film, I love seeing his new, much more video game-accurate look. It brings back memories of when I used to play the Sonic the Hedgehog Sega Genesis games, and I can’t wait to get that feeling all over again in the theater.
Last but not least, the story of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 looks much bigger than the previous movie. The official plot synopsis teases “a globe-trotting journey” for our heroes, and the trailer bears that out. It shows Sonic and Knuckles in some really cool-looking locations, and I’m sure we’ll see even more in the full film.
When we put these three elements together, we get a downright fantastic trailer, so I’m counting down the days until I finally get to see Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It’s set to hit theaters on April 8, and you can bet I’ll be first in line to see it on opening night.
