I’m a huge fan of superhero movies. Whether they’re Marvel, DC, or anything else, I love seeing superpowered beings go head to head and show off all the cool things they can do. However, there is one blind spot in my superhero fandom: animated films. Sure, there are a few exceptions, like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Incredibles, but by and large, I tend to stick to the live-action side. So when I saw the trailer for the new DC animated film Injustice, I was caught off guard. It looks a lot better than I was expecting, so as surprised as I am to say it, I have to admit that I really want to see this movie. Here’s the official plot synopsis:
“Inspired by Injustice: Gods Among Us, NetherRealm Studios’ popular video game, and the best-selling DC graphic novel based on the video game, Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year One by Tom Taylor, the animated film Injustice finds an alternate world gone mad, where The Joker has duped Superman into killing Lois Lane, sending the Man of Steel on a deadly rampage. Unhinged, Superman decides to take control of the Earth for humanity’s own good. Determined to stop him, Batman creates a team of like-minded, freedom-fighting heroes. But when Super Heroes go to war, can the world survive?”
There’s a lot to love about the Injustice trailer, but two things in particular really stand out to me. For starters, I’m intrigued by the bloody violence. While we don’t see a ton of it, there’s just enough to let us know this isn’t your typical family-friendly comic book movie. It’s going to be in the vein of popular R-rated films like Deadpool and Logan, and I’m always up for seeing more adult-oriented superhero action.
That being said, don’t write off Injustice as just a superpowered gorefest. The short trailer does a good job of mixing its blood and violence with genuine emotion, so it appears that we’re in for a compelling story as well as some fun visuals. For example, seeing Superman hold Lois Lane’s lifeless body in his arms is pretty heartbreaking, and the final shot, where Batman says, “I thought I could redeem you. I was wrong” looks like an emotional gut-punch that hardcore fans will still be feeling well after the credits roll.
On their own, each of those two elements is intriguing enough, but when you combine them in one movie, you have the potential for something really special. It makes me super excited to see Injustice, and luckily, I won’t have to wait too long. The film hits 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and VOD on October 19, so we’re only a few weeks away from finding out if it lives up to the promise of its exciting trailer.
