I’m a huge kaiju fan. I love just about any monster that towers over us puny humans, whether it’s Godzilla, King Kong, Gamera, Mothra, or any other creature that fits the bill. I love them all.
But I don’t love them all equally. My two favorites are Godzilla and King Kong, so you can probably guess that I’m more than just a little bit excited for the new Godzilla vs. Kong trailer. This has been my most anticipated movie for two years in a row, so it feels almost surreal that it’s finally going to come out in just under two months.
And after waiting all that time, the trailer does not disappoint. To begin, it gives us some really cool shots of the monsters in action. I especially like the shot of Kong doing his best Thor impression by using a battle axe to block Godzilla’s atomic breath and then bash him across the face. That’s obviously just a small glimpse of what the movie has in store, and I absolutely cannot wait to see the full fight between these two behemoths.
On top of that, it also introduces us to some new characters we haven’t seen before. In particular, I’m really intrigued by the little girl who can communicate with Kong. This looks like an interesting twist on the classic trope of the giant ape falling in love with a woman, so I’m curious to see what her story is.
And finally, the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer gives us a glimpse of what this movie is actually going to be about. It seems that Godzilla is running amok, so the humans have brought in Kong to take him down and put an end to his deadly shenanigans. But is that what’s really going on? I’m not entirely convinced.
See, that’s very similar to what happened in the kaiju classic Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. At first, it seemed that Godzilla had turned into a bad guy, but then it’s revealed that it was actually Mechagodzilla, a giant robot modeled after Godzilla, masquerading as the giant lizard. After that, Godzilla had to team up with another monster, King Caesar, to defeat him.
And I suspect that something similar is going on here. Sure, it might not be that exact storyline (although there have been rumors that Mechagodzilla is going to be in this film), but I’d be willing to bet that there’s a lot more to it than what the trailer lets on.
Whatever ends up happening, it’s just great to finally get a trailer for this film. There are few things better than sitting back and watching two giant monsters duke it out in a big city, and Godzilla vs. Kong promises to scratch that itch when it comes out in theaters and on HBO Max on March 26.
