Winners Announced for the HCA’s 2023 Midseason Movie Awards

After nominations announced earlier in the week on Tuesday, voting concluded for the 2023 HCA Midseason Movie Awards. Today, the Hollywood Critics Association announced today their winners in eleven categories. Film Obsessive Assistant Editor and Content Supervisor Don Shanahan is a voting member of the HCA.

In a competitive vote, Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the smash hit and well-regarded animated sequel won two of its three nominations. The film took home the top prize of Best Picture while Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson won Best Director. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse marks the first-ever time an animated film has won Best Picture or Best Director with the HCA.

Following close behind and leading the field in total wins, A24’s indie darling Past Lives took home three awards, including Best Actress for Greta Lee, Best Screenplay for Celine Song, and Best Indie Film. Additionally, the Amazon Studios hit Air won Best Actor for Matt Damon and Best Supporting Actress for Viola Davis.
